India – The Land of my dreams – Series 1

Standard

Wondering what this post is about? Well its obvious that it is about India – as most of you have guessed. It is also about my thoughts, experiences and a story book of sorts about India. Hence the series..I am hoping this will be one of many posts about what is so dear to me..the land of my birth, the land I spent so much of my life in and the land I left behind only to be reminiscing about, dreaming about in a hope that one day I will be part of again…

To a foreign traveller who has travelled to India..She is a mystical experience, an experience that is so shocking yet so completely comforting, vibrant rich in culture and heritage, steeped in traditions and superstitions, colorful, religious, hospitable and sometimes unnerving, scary and even downright disgusting.. Its a mixed experience in all. Most however, leave the land with a once in a lifetime experience hoping to be back to experience it all over again.

To an Indian living abroad, she is motherland..somehow the patriotism wells into a fever after we leave the land..we know that there is bad politics, the corruption, the endless traffic, the bad weather in some parts of the country (weather is a relative thing actually!!) and the never ending woes of life in India..but yet India is the land that beckons, the land that we miss for its food, the noise, the people, the traffic (really that is relative too), the weather (told you..), the shopping, the history, the traditions, family  etc. the list is endless actually.. Most Indians living abroad have a small part of them that still says “You will never belong anywhere else, you will only feel that complete sense of belongingness in India”…given that most won’t admit to this 🙂 And that’s ok actually, people have their reasons… but somewhere deep inside this is how most feel!!

And then there is the Indians living in India..complaining about the traffic, to the rains! to corruption, to AAP to Arvind Kejriwal, to Modi now, to slow internet and to everything under the sun!! We are really a dissatisfied lot! coming  to think of it 🙂 But we still take pride in exactly the same things we complained about, we love our Bollywood, our Tollywood, our Kollywood or how many ever woods we have 🙂 we love our politics, our food and our street food (really obesity and other gastronomic ailments are fast becoming taboo in India), our people, our noise …. And most definitely we love our history, our discoveries and our culture..we take pride in Ayurveda, in Yoga, our Vedas and Mathematics and the endless list of innovations and inventions we have offered to the world..

To me, she is home, she is where my heart is and she is what I am today..

In all, this tiny land (as compared to the rest of the world) is an experience you must experience to understand it all…
